Why do you need more volunteers?
Samaritans is entirely dependent on voluntary support.  We need new volunteers to be trained to help us support our callers.

What support do volunteers get?
You will train, learn and then work with a group of people who will act as informal back-up for you. When you are on the phones, there will always be experienced volunteers on hand to support you. Volunteers are never left to cope with a harrowing call on their own.

Back

How long does it take to train?
If you are selected for training, you will attend a series of classes to ensure you are fully prepared for your role as a Samaritan. Typical class schedules are:

8 weekday sessions 6.45pm-9.15pm     OR

3 weekend sessions 10.00am-4.00pm
1 weekend session 10.00am-1.00pm
1 weekday session  6.45pm-9.00pm

We also run a series of classes during the daytime.

I have a full-time job/other commitments during the day - can I do shifts in the evenings and at weekends?
Samaritan volunteers are from all walks of life, which includes having commitments / jobs during the day. Doing a shift in the evening or at the weekend therefore fits in with their lifestyle.

Back

What is the volunteer commitment?
Volunteers are normally required to do one day or evening shift per fortnight and one nightwatch every four weeks - you will be asked to give about 15 hours a month. These are examples of shift times. We also have 'split shifts' which are sometimes more convenient for volunteers.

Daytime/Evening Shifts
Morning 8.30am - 1.30pm
Afternoon 1.30pm - 6.00pm
Evening 6.00pm - 10.00pm

Nightwatch
10pm - 3.00am or 3.00am - 8.30am

Back

Do I have to do a night shift?
Samaritans run a 24 hour emotional support helpline which needs to be manned throughout the night. In fact, demand from callers is at its greatest between 10pm - 2am. Therefore it is essential we have volunteers available to take calls at that time.

Back

Where will I be taking the calls from?
All calls will be taken from the Samaritans centre. This ensures absolute confidentiality for the caller and support to be at hand for the volunteer if needed.

Back

What qualities are you looking for in a volunteer?
We are looking for people who can empathise with our callers and can be caring and understanding of their situation. You don't need formal qualifications or previous experience, but a natural ability to listen and remain open minded are essential skills.

Back

How else could I help?
There are many different ways to support Samaritans without having to be a volunteer on the phones. To find out, click here.
